Robertsons Tobermory, was released in February 2021. It was distilled in October 2007 and bottled in September 2020, just short of becoming a teenager.
This bottle is from an ex bourbon cask (cask no. 702603). Teaninich is a difficult whisky to find as since 1992 the only distillery bottling was as a 10yo under the ‘Flora & Fauna’ range from Diageo, but even that is hard to find now. The distillery mainly produces malts for blending, and it is used in Johnnie Walker Red Label.
As with all the casks I buy I follow one very simple rules: if I like them I buy them. I don’t focus on particular regions, distilleries or finishes, but on the individual flavour characteristics of the cask. When selecting casks I will probably choose around 1 in every 10 casks that I taste.
Tasting notes are very personal and subjective, but here is what I get:
Nose: Sweet vanilla and creamy butter, creme caramel, light oak. Add water and the oak opens up with more vanilla and warm buttered toast.
Taste: Hot and spicy, rich creamy butter and vanilla. Peanut butter brittle and slight salinity. Add water and the heat softens but the spice opens up and lengthens. Soft warm and amazingly zingy.
Finish: Spice remains, buttery with a rich oily mouth feel. Long finish with a hint of sea salt.
If you decide to buy this bottling then thank you. I have no doubt that you will enjoy this delicious whisky.
